History

The Barrington at 10 Smith Street in Parramatta is rich in history, named after George Barrington, an Irish-born socialite turned pickpocket.

His incredible journey led him from London in 1755 to becoming the High Constable of Parramatta in 1796.

Barrington was celebrated in London’s press as ‘the Prince of Pickpockets’ as he had the manners of a gentleman and could gain access to high society and lucrative plunder. Despite his infamy, he was transported to New South Wales as a convict in 1790.

History

On the voyage to Botany Bay, he disclosed to the Captain a plot by convicts to seize the ship.

These actions kicked off a chain of events that eventually led to a pardon for his crimes. He earned a job as superintendent of convicts and, in 1796, was appointed High Constable of Parramatta.

The building was constructed during the 1970’s and was substantially refurbished in 2011. It has been in the ISPT portfolio since 2000.
